What is oil pulling? And why do it?

Oil Pulling is an ancient practice of swishing a plant-based oil in your mouth for up to 20 minutes, and then spitting out. While you swish, the fat from the oil forms a bond with the fatty membrane of bacteria in your mouth, and when you spit the oil out, you naturally remove the bacteria with it. This practice has many benefits for your oral health, but most importantly, it is naturally removing harmful bacteria from the mouth which will keep that bacteria out of your gut, and prevent it from causing sickness in the body. Science is finding that the mouth is the gateway to health for the body, and there are links between bacteria in the mouth, and disease in the body.

Do I really have to swish for 20 minutes?

Just do what you can! Don't overthink it. Even 3-5 minutes is doing wonders. You also don't have to be ACTIVELY swishing the whole time, you can just hold it in your mouth at times too. We find that pairing oil pulling with another morning habit you already have, or want to have, is the best way to make the time pass!

Do I still need to brush my teeth?

Yes. Oil pulling is not a replacement for brushing your teeth. Brushing will always be needed to remove the larger particles stuck in and around your teeth and gums from eating. Oil pulling can assist this too, but is also doing the other jobs of nourishing oral tissues, fighting bacteria, and helping to balance your oral, gut, and whole body system! You can oil pull before or after brushing your teeth.

What if my jar melts and separates?

We have an easy fix! Simply run your tap water as hot (and steamy) as it will go. Fill a cup or bowl large enough to submerge your jar of Magic Mouth in about 3/4. Let sit for 2 minutes. Then remove from water bath, open lid, and the oil should be softened enough to stir, but not totally liquid. You can use a small spoon, or a stirring stick works even better!

Most people can find a place in their home under 75 degrees to store their Magic Mouth. If you live somewhere rather hot, and don’t like to use liquid oil, then you can keep it in the fridge.

Can I oil pull other times of day?

Yes. You can oil pull whenever the mood strikes you. Your mouth will thank you for it. But, overnight while you sleep, bacteria multiply in your mouth. You can probably feel this when you wake up. So this really is the most effective time to capture that bacteria and get it out of there before you starting eating and drinking.

Can I oil pull when I’m sick?

Definitely. It is recommended to oil pull up to 3 times a day when you have an active bacterial sickness, or feel one coming on. Ridding the mouth and body of as much bacteria as possible can help you on your way to health quicker, and reduce the number of bacteria being spread through your oral pathways.

What can I do while oil pulling to pass the time?

What CAN’T you do? Add your swishing to almost anything you already do first thing. We also see this as a golden opportunity to have fun with a new morning routine.

What is Neem?

The Neem tree in India is known as the ‘Divine Tree’, or the ‘Village Pharmacy”.  Its use has been recorded for over 4500 years in Ayurvedic medicine. All parts of the Neem tree have been studied and used for many medicinal purposes topically, internally, and orally. In the Ayurvedic system, Neem bark and leaf are used to heal the gums and has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic properties.

What is Diatomaceous Earth?

Diatomaceous Earth is the fossilized remains of marine plants called Diatoms. These fossilized shells are made up almost entirely of Silica. Silicia is a very important trace mineral that can help generate enamel. Plus these hard particles are perfect for scrubbing stains from your teeth. Diatomaceous Earth also has a highly absorbent quality, making it capable of binding with heavy metals, and toxins.

What is Xylitol?

Xylitol gives Magic Mouth its sweet sugary taste. Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol that comes from plants, and is then processed into a usable crystallized form. There are a lot of exciting advancements currently being made in the manufacturing of xylitol, involving natural yeasts and fermentation processes. One thing we can’t deny is the research and proven effectiveness of xylitol for dental health, and dentists across the globe agree. Mouth bacteria (such as Streptococcus mutans) can’t use xylitol as a source of energy, so it can help in preventing tooth decay and the buildup of plaque on your teeth. We’ve sourced our xylitol from non-GMO corn cobs, and like that this process utilizes biomass that would have been waste.
